What drives the stats?

Like many other Medium writers, I obsess over my stats. I refresh more times than I’d like to admit. I love seeing the numbers, views, and member read time update in real-time. I just can’t help it — it’s fun and addicting!

But have you ever wondered what a Medium reader’s journey to your article looks like? Where do they come from? You can imagine me asking that question in my best Neil deGrasse Tyson voice.

Let’s say you have an article that is performing well. What caused it to do well? Some writers could attribute the success of that story to a catchy headline. Or the content is really that good. …

Welcome to my profile page! My name is Quy Ma (pronounced kwee maw, if you were curious).

I’m 32 years old and I’m a first-generation Vietnamese American, the oldest of three boys. My parents immigrated to the United States after the Vietnam War to start a new life, away from an oppressive regime in the 1980s.

I was born in Oakland, California, raised in Houston, Texas, and now live in the beautiful state of Utah with my wife and two Siberian Huskies.

The Publication: About Me Stories

Introductions

We spend our entire lives introducing ourselves to people in every situation possible. Why should Medium be an exception?

One of the most important things a Medium writer should do is introduce themselves to the world with their first post. Veteran Medium writers have also figured out an “About Me” story gives their followers additional details about who they are.

I figured a place like a publication that can host all of the authors’ introductory stories and learn more about each other would make sense!

The Publication

About Me Stories is a publication that is dedicated to hosting stories about the best part about Medium: The Writers, Bloggers, and Dreamers! You! My goal is to make this publication a welcoming place for established and new writers alike. …

Hey y’all,

Welcome to the second post of the year in About Me Stories for Twenty Twenty One. I had to make sure I typed out 2021 deliberately since last week’s post, I had put 2020. Oops! We’re good!

About Me Stories is off to a strong start in 2021! In last week’s post, I said we had 1,137 writers, this week we’re up to 1211 followers! What an incredible burst of momentum and it’s thanks to each of you.

Also, Jennifer Marie, my co-editor, is back from her hiatus! She’ll be planning to ramp back up her engagement with the publication very soon as she gets back on her feet. …

Like many people, I’m very introverted, naturally shy, and have serious doubts about my capabilities constantly.

Meeting new people drains me. I get anxious from cold-calling people even if it’s as simple as calling the dentist's office for an appointment. I hate networking events. I’m constantly questioning whether I made a good impression or not on others. I have depression issues and have low self-esteem.

Honestly, I think it’s a miracle I got anything accomplished in life. But here’s the kicker — I did. Many times over.

In the last 10 years, I’ve moved up the corporate ladder aggressively. I’ve been managing large teams for years. I live on a comfortable salary in Utah, with a great view of the Rocky Mountains. And currently, I’m trying to build my writing skills in my spare time. …

Despite being heckled, Romney responded like how a President should respond to his political opponents.

Last night, I saw a video of Mitt Romney being heckled by a MAGA supporter at SLC Airport on Twitter. The video has gone viral and has garnered over 4.7M views thus far and I anticipate it being all over national news today.

Source:

Despite the rudeness and harassment from the anti-masker, Romney remained ever the gentleman, explaining his opinions thoughtfully and calmly. This kind of behavior validates my faith in him that he has presidential qualities and behavior.

Our current President, on the other hand, has been known to throw tantrums at the slightest insult, be incapable of apologizing, and demean his political opponents. …
